About the Award

The Writers’ Trust Engel Findley Award is given to a mid-career writer in recognition of a remarkable body of work, and in anticipation of future contributions to Canadian literature. All Canadian writers are eligible. The winner, selected by a three-member, independent judging panel, is announced annually at the Writers’ Trust Awards. The award is supported by The Estate of Timothy Findley and the Writers' Trust Prize Fund.

2025 Winner

Kim Thúy

Jury Citation

“Kim Thúy’s body of work is original, compelling, and emotionally rendered. Told in a spare, yet poetic style, Thúy’s work harbours an artful exactitude that balances the painful truths of colonization and war, with love and everyday human connection. These sensorily immersive stories of lost innocence, dispossession, the Vietnamese diaspora in Quebec, and human perseverance are ones that stay with the reader. The brilliance of her novels has been brought to a wider readership with Sheila Fischman’s translations. Thúy’s writing challenges the boundaries of genre while her focus on the human plight remains front and centre.” —2025 Engel Findley Award jury (Daniel Grenier, Chelene Knight, and Jeanette Lynes)

It’s incredible to be told, when it feels like you’re bumping along in the middle of nowhere, that you’re on the right path. It feels like a big, beautiful lifeline.
