About

Our Story

We all remember the one book that changed our world.

A red headed orphan arrives at a farm in PEI by mistake and is eager to belong. Manawaka is home to heroines who reflect the broadest spectrum of human emotions. A fish hook, an open eye.

Writers’ Trust of Canada was founded in 1976 by writers — Margaret Atwood, Pierre Berton, Graeme Gibson, Margaret Laurence, and David Young — with a goal to make Canada the best place in the world to be a writer. 50 years later, it is Canada’s leading charitable organization that advances, nurtures, and celebrates Canadian writers and writing.

Canadian voices have the power change worlds far beyond our own border, and Writers’ Trust will continue the work of amplifying these empathetic and imaginative writers.

Writers’ Trust is one of a handful of organizations of its kind in the world.

Through a portfolio of programs that includes 13 literary awards, financial grants, career development initiatives for emerging writers, and a residency, Writers’ Trust ensures that readers have the very best Canadian writers to choose from. Writers’ Trust programming is designed to champion excellence in Canadian writing, to improve the status of writers, and to create connections between writers and readers. Canada’s writers receive more financial support from Writers’ Trust than from any other non-governmental organization in the country.

Great writing takes time. Financial stress often keeps writers away from their work. Writers who benefit from our awards and programs say that the time they gain is invaluable: the time to finish a book, to promote their work, to mitigate an unforeseen personal crisis. When Writers’ Trust enables writers to make even the smallest changes in their lives, the reverberations can have a significant impact on readers around the world.

The world needs to hear what Canadian writers have to say. We envision a literary community where we continually forge strong connections between writers and readers: a community where we all rally around our writers and laud their achievements. It is our mission to advance, nurture, and celebrate Canadian writers and writing so that our country’s voices are heard from coast to coast to coast and beyond.

Writers' Trust is a pillar of the Canadian writing community, providing vital programs for writers at every stage of their careers.
