“Celebratory and elegiac, ‘Paint Job’ is a time capsule that transports readers to the fraught ground of young adulthood. Deftly sketching the affective ties and class markers that both fracture and unite neighbours, Katie Lawrence depicts joyful connections and missed opportunities. Her precise details and vividly rendered scenes seamlessly evoke a world of changing friendships and part-time jobs, for some unrecoverable and others inescapable, that is instantly recognizable.”—2026 RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers Creative Nonfiction Jury (Alison Calder, Robert McGill, Padma Viswanathan)
