Jury Citation

“Ivan Coyote’s Tomboy Survival Guide is an intimate, irreverent memoir about growing up transgender in a rigidly gendered world. Armed with compassion and a ready supply of wry wit, Coyote recounts their personal history through a collection of fine-spun tales – tracking life as an outsider and illuminating a way of being that our culture has far too long denied. At every step, Coyote deploys tireless cheek and transcendent empathy in confronting the indifference and outright hostility that mark daily life for transgender people. The result is an idiosyncratic testament that moves readers from all hues of the gender spectrum to see one another – and themselves – more truly.” – 2017 Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction Jury (Susan Harada, Arno Kopecky, and Siobhan Roberts)
