“Through bold prose, Hana Mason’s gripping narrative weaves a haunting tale that explores the complexities of identity and the act of disappearing without a trace. She creates an atmosphere of quiet tension that fills each page and illustrates how easily individuals can slip into roles and fabricate lies, ultimately vanishing from their previous lives. ‘Training the Replacement’ provides clarity and insight, resonating with readers long after the last word. Mason’s skill in capturing human nature ensures this story is an unforgettable experience.”—2025 RBC Bronwen Wallace Award short fiction jury (Jean Marc Ah-Sen, Baharan Baniahmadi, and Shashi Bhat)
