Jury Citation

“A wonderfully captivating and original writer who never allows her moral concerns to imperil either her sense of humour or her deep understanding of the essential madness of life, Dianne Warren deserves to be much more widely known in our country. She also has an idiosyncratic way of humanizing situations that are at times preposterous, surreal. Her gifts as a playwright serve her superbly in her fiction too, above all in the ways she distributes both virtue and bad behaviour with such a generous hand that even bigots and self-righteous souls are occasionally permitted, however temporarily, to become agents of redemption.”
— 2004 Marian Engel Award Jury (Terry Griggs, Elisabeth Harvor, and Fred Stenson)
