The Writers’ Trust Gala brings together prominent figures from the business and literary arts communities and is one of the most prestigious events in the city. Each gala table features a Canadian guest writer—past renowned guest authors include Margaret Atwood, Joseph Boyden, Miriam Toews, Vincent Lam, Emma Donoghue, Adrienne Clarkson, Noah Richler, Ann-Marie MacDonald, and Lawrence Hill. The Writers’ Trust Gala is a true celebration of Canadian literature and of the Canadian authors we are proud to support.
Last year's gala was a celebration of Writers' Trust founder Margaret Atwood's 75th birthday. Thanks to star craftician Kalpna Patel, paper slices of birthday cake and colourful hardcovers adorned each table, complete with Margaret Atwood's inspiring quote: "A word after a word after a word is power."
Friends Alice Munro, Joseph Boyden, and Vincent Lam offered personal messages via a short video, which also feautured daughter Jess Atwood Gibson and a special song from partner Graeme Gibson. Melanie Doane's Uschool succeeded in surprising the self-proclaimed unsuprisable guest of honour with a ukulele rendition of "Happy Birthday," after which Atwood took the stage to thank the crowd, adding a few words in support of cultural creators. Read Margaret Atwood's speech.
